A fire that ignited just after noon Friday on the 16000 block of Big Turtle Drive, roughly 12 miles north of Bemidji in Turtle Lake Township, destroyed a structure and its entire contents, injured a firefighter, and sent a civilian to a regional hospital with burn injuries.

Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood confirmed 28 firefighters and approximately 10 pieces of equipment responded to the blaze. Crews worked the scene for roughly five hours before extinguishing the major hot spots. The building and everything inside it were a total loss.

Officials transported the civilian to a regional hospital for treatment but did not immediately release the person's identity. A firefighter sustained minor injuries during the response.

Sherwood told reporters the cause "appears to be accidental," though the official origin determination remains under investigation. Investigators on site could receive additional support from the Minnesota State Fire Marshal depending on what they find.

The response required mutual-aid assistance from neighboring departments, reflecting the challenge of fighting a fast-moving structure fire deep in rural Beltrami County, where distance from Bemidji compounds the demands on equipment and personnel. The roughly five-hour operation and the extent of the damage pointed to rapid fire spread.

Following the incident, the Bemidji Fire Department reinforced fire prevention basics: safe use of heating and electrical equipment, functioning smoke alarms, and caution around any activity that can generate sparks. Late March dry conditions in northern Minnesota can accelerate fire behavior considerably.

Residents displaced by the fire can seek assistance through Beltrami County emergency management or the American Red Cross.
