United Way of the Bemidji Area launched its Holiday Gifts for Kids program on November 19 to collect and distribute new toys for children from low income households across Beltrami, Clearwater and Hubbard counties. The program invites families to pre register for two distribution days that will be held in December, with a distribution planned for December 11 at the Sanford Event Center in Bemidji and another on December 16 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Laporte.

Families who pre register must meet registration deadlines, which are December 4 for the Bemidji event and December 9 for the Laporte event. Parents will be able to select gifts for their children during the distribution events, and each family will receive a board game. United Way reported that more than 1,300 children benefited from the program in 2024, underscoring the continuing need for holiday support in the region.

Donation drop off locations and deadlines are listed on the United Way website, and paper registration forms are available at several local businesses and agencies. The program depends on community donations and volunteers to assemble and distribute gifts, and timely contributions will be essential to meet demand before the distribution dates.

For local residents, the program represents more than seasonal generosity. Providing new toys and small comforts can reduce stress for parents managing tight budgets, and support social and emotional well being for children during an economically pressured time of year. Access to programs like this also highlights broader issues of income inequality and the need for coordinated social supports, including transportation assistance and outreach to households that may face barriers to online registration.

Community leaders and policymakers can view the program as a reminder that short term charitable efforts must be paired with long term investments in affordable housing, living wage jobs and comprehensive family services. In the meantime United Way is urging residents to donate, pick up paper registration forms if needed, and help ensure families in Beltrami County and neighboring areas can take part in the December distributions.
