Winter events bring nature, civic meetings and health resources to Beltrami
A week of winter programs and meetings across Beltrami County offers nature outings, community gatherings and health resources.

Beltrami County residents can expect a busy slate of winter programming and community meetings this week, with nature outings at Lake Bemidji State Park, a Winter Rendezvous near Hackensack, and regional bird talks drawing visitors to Sax-Zim Bog. These events combine recreation, volunteer-led civic activity and health support services that matter to local families, seniors and small businesses that depend on winter tourism.
Officials and community groups are staging family-focused education at Lake Bemidji State Park with Winter Nature Art for Kids scheduled for 10 to 11 a.m. and Snow-Tastic Science from 2 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19. Organizers note Snow-Tastic Science may be canceled if temperatures fall below zero, a reminder that programming decisions are governed by safety thresholds that affect access to public programs during deep cold.
Midweek brings opportunities for civic participation beyond recreation. The Friends of the Brainerd Public Library will hold its annual meeting Wednesday evening, Jan. 21. Library friend groups and similar nonprofits play an active role in local cultural programming, fundraising and volunteer coordination; attendance at such meetings gives residents a direct line into how institutions set priorities and steward public resources.
Community health and arts offerings round out the week. A Grand Rapids Community Diabetes Support Group meets Thursday, Jan. 22 at the YMCA Active Living Center, providing ongoing peer support and links to local health resources. On Friday, Jan. 23, a local history talk titled "Echoes Beyond the Pit" is scheduled at 1 p.m. at the Hoyt Lakes Public Library, and a staged reading of The Pillowman will be performed at 7 p.m. at Dryden Theater on the Central Lakes College campus, offering cultural programming that draws audiences from across the region.
Saturday, Jan. 24 highlights regional winter festivals including Ski-Palooza and a range of other outdoor events that help sustain the county's winter economy by drawing day visitors and supporting recreation-related businesses.
The week also includes a Winter Rendezvous at Deep Portage Learning Center near Hackensack and bird talks at Sax-Zim Bog near Meadowlands, events that historically attract nature enthusiasts and birders and contribute to local tourism patterns during the shoulder season.
For residents, this week is both a chance to get outside and a reminder that public programs rely on coordinated institutional support and volunteer engagement. Participation in meetings and park programs helps shape which services persist through budget cycles and how safety policies are applied in extreme weather. Expect more winter programming through the month as organizations balance access, safety and opportunities for civic involvement.
