Albuquerque woman killed in neighbor dispute over patio water spill

Michael Cain was charged with open count of murder after Albuquerque police said a dispute over water spilling from one patio onto another at the Albuquerque Encore Apartments ended with 22-year-old Esmeralda Romero stabbed to death near the leasing office. Police said Cain, 39, took issue with water from Romero’s patio reaching his own, argued with her, and then attacked her at the northeast Albuquerque complex on Eubank near I-40.

Detectives first responded to a deadly stabbing in the 800 block of Eubank Boulevard, near Eubank and Lomas, where they found a person stabbed to death. In the first police update, neither the victim nor the suspect had been identified. Later, authorities identified the victim as Esmeralda Romero and the suspect as Michael Cain, who was booked on charges that also included tampering with evidence and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The killing has drawn attention because it began with a complaint that is common in apartment living: water dripping or spilling between adjacent patios. At Encore Apartments, that disagreement escalated from a neighbor dispute into violence near the leasing office, a location where residents often expect help resolving problems before they turn dangerous.

Neighbors described Romero as “young” and “smart,” a reaction that underscored the shock felt inside the apartment community. The case has also raised hard questions for dense residential complexes across Bernalillo County about how quickly property managers can step in when a feud starts to spill beyond a patio edge, and how much warning a building gets before a confrontation turns fatal.
