Fire damages Subway roof near Menaul and Juan Tabo, no injuries

Smoke pouring from the roof of a Subway at 1111 Menaul Blvd. NE drew Albuquerque Fire Rescue to the restaurant near Menaul and Juan Tabo before sunrise Friday, with crews arriving around 4:50 a.m. The fire was knocked down without any reported injuries to the public or firefighters.

Fire crews found smoke coming from the roof when they reached the building, a location on one of northeast Albuquerque’s busiest commercial stretches. The restaurant sits along Menaul Blvd. NE near Juan Tabo, where strip centers, drive-thru businesses and other neighborhood tenants depend on steady early-morning traffic from commuters and nearby residents.

Albuquerque Fire Rescue said the fire was brought under control within about 35 minutes of arrival. Damage was mostly contained to the roof, limiting the spread inside the structure and helping prevent a larger loss for the business and surrounding properties.

The quick response kept the incident from becoming a broader emergency in the corridor, where a single roof fire can threaten neighboring storefronts, shared walls and customer parking areas. For businesses nearby, the fact that the blaze stayed largely on the roof means the disruption was concentrated at the Subway itself rather than spreading through the strip center.

The early hour also limited the risk to customers and passing traffic, but the call still added another reminder of how fast commercial fires can develop in densely built retail areas. Even when crews get flames under control in less than an hour, roof damage can leave a restaurant closed while repairs and safety checks are completed.
