Police investigate fatal shooting at northwest Albuquerque apartment complex

Albuquerque police are investigating a fatal shooting at the Volcanes Commons apartments after officers responded to reports of gunfire shortly before midnight at the northwest Albuquerque complex. The apartments sit just west of Coors Boulevard and Interstate 40, a busy west-side corridor where residents pass between homes, businesses and the interstate every day.

The shooting left one person dead, and APD has treated the case as a homicide investigation. The apartment complex’s location near the Coors and I-40 interchange puts it squarely in a part of the city where calls for service can quickly ripple through surrounding neighborhoods, especially when police activity closes off access to a residential property.

The Volcanes Commons case comes as Albuquerque police continue to deal with other deadly apartment-complex shootings across the city. In a separate North Valley case, APD identified 23-year-old Jose Armas after a standoff at an apartment complex on May 26, 2026. According to police, two officers exchanged gunfire with Armas during that confrontation.

Police also said Armas had a short criminal history, including a felony case. That detail adds to the pressure on APD and apartment managers alike as residents in complexes across Bernalillo County watch for whether building security, patrols and rapid police response are keeping pace with violence in shared residential spaces.

For now, investigators are still working the fatal shooting at Volcanes Commons, and the most important questions remain basic: who was involved, what led to the gunfire, and whether the complex had seen earlier safety problems before the shooting that killed one person near Coors Boulevard and Interstate 40.
