Hilo Theater Seeks Local Talent for Disney's Frozen Musical Auditions

Performers as young as 8 have less than 24 hours to prepare for a shot at Disney's Frozen: The Musical. The Hilo Education Arts Repertory Theatre is holding auditions March 30 and 31 at the historic Hilo Palace Theatre downtown, with callbacks set for April 3.

HEART structured the process to reach the full range of East Hawai'i's talent pool. Keiki ages 8 to 12 audition in a separate window from the teen and adult group, which starts at 13. Both groups should arrive with about 16 bars of music prepared, roughly one minute's worth, drawn from Broadway or Disney catalog material rather than pop or rock. The material requirement isn't incidental; HEART is building an ensemble rooted in musical theater tradition, and that preparation standard holds even for its youngest performers.

The production is framed as deliberately large and inclusive, designed to place as many local young people on stage and behind the scenes as possible. Auditions are really just the most visible entry point. Stage management, technical crew, and costumes all need hands, creating pathways for community members whose strengths run toward stagecraft rather than spotlight. In an East Hawai'i school environment where arts program budgets are frequently stretched, HEART's productions have served as a practical arts education extension, offering mentoring and resume-building experience for youth. The organization has previously staged benefit concerts featuring touring Broadway talent, deepening its connections to the professional theater world.
