Missing Eden Roc woman found safe in Mountain View

A 61-year-old Eden Roc woman who had been reported missing was found safe in Mountain View on Thursday, ending a search that began after she was last seen the evening of Wednesday, May 6, at a residence on 17th Street.

Hawaii Police Department officials said Joan Sachiko Mayo, formerly known as Joan Hamamoto, was located in good health and thanked the public for helping spread the alert. The missing-person notice had been issued on May 7, after she was reported missing from the Eden Roc area on Hawaii Island.

The original alert described Mayo as Asian, 5 feet 3 inches tall and about 125 pounds, with black-and-salt-and-pepper shoulder-length hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a brownish-apricot short-sleeve shirt and blue jeans. Police also said she had been walking with her dog, Moanlisa, a Catahoula mix described as white with brown spots, wearing a brown choke collar and a light brown vest with a bell.

The case was resolved the same day police asked anyone with information to call the department’s non-emergency line at (808) 935-3311. Once officers confirmed Mayo had been located in Mountain View, the alert no longer needed to circulate, and the public was told she was safe.

For families and neighbors across the Puna side, the update is a reminder that missing-person notices can move quickly on Hawaii Island when residents share them and police can verify a person’s location. In this case, the search ended within hours of the report, with Mayo found safe in another Mountain View area and the department closing the loop on a brief but urgent disappearance.
