Buena Vista County Historical Society Hosts Spring Garage Sale Fundraiser in Storm Lake

The spring garage sale at the Buena Vista County Historical Society wrapped up its three-day run last weekend at 214 West 5th Street in Storm Lake, turning donated housewares, craft supplies, vintage pieces, and holiday décor into operational revenue for one of the county's oldest cultural institutions.

The sale ran Thursday, March 26 from 1 to 6 p.m., Friday, March 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed out Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers from the society staffed all three days, organizing donations and working signage across the sale floor. Items were donated by community members and priced to draw a broad range of shoppers, from bargain hunters to those looking to contribute directly to the museum's mission.

Proceeds go toward the society's day-to-day operations, exhibit maintenance, and educational programming. The museum, housed in a 1920 Ford building donated to the society by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Melander of Alta, is funded entirely through membership dues, fundraisers like this one, and tax-deductible donations. There is no government line item keeping the lights on at 214 West 5th Street.

What those dollars protect is a collection with genuine surprises. The museum's Pioneer Main Street recreates early Storm Lake storefronts and includes a doctor's office and the preserved interior of the Rembrandt bank, hit by the Bonnie and Clyde gang in 1934. The Mill Creek Native American exhibit documents the region's pre-settlement history, and an 1872 country schoolhouse from Elk Township now stands in Sunrise Park along the northeast shore of Storm Lake. The society's first major gift, decades ago, was the donation of a Prairie Log Home by Mr. and Mrs. Oscar "Ossie" Anderson of Rembrandt, a cabin that anchors the outdoor campus.

The spring garage sale is a recurring fixture in the historical society's fundraising calendar, and it also functions as one of the few moments each year when the museum draws foot traffic from residents who might not otherwise walk through its doors. The society was founded in 1960 and relies almost entirely on grassroots support to keep its programming, school field trips, and research library accessible to the public.
