Buena Vista County sets 2026 online tax sale for June 15

Buena Vista County scheduled its 2026 online tax sale for 9 a.m. Monday, June 15, at the Buena Vista County Courthouse in Storm Lake, with bids to be placed online and no requirement that bidders appear in person. The formal notice put the sale in the Supervisors’ Board Room on the first floor of the courthouse, 215 E. 5th St.

The notice named Buena Vista County Treasurer Danelle R. Haberman as the official handling the sale. Haberman took office March 1, 2021, and the treasurer’s office oversees county funds and investment functions, prepares and delivers tax statements, processes vehicle registrations and titles, and issues driver’s licenses.

The tax sale itself is governed by Iowa Code Chapter 446 and, under the standard statewide schedule, occurs on the third Monday in June. In Buena Vista County, the county’s annual auction is part of the larger property-tax collection process. Once a parcel entered tax sale, the clock kept running. Iowa Code 447.9 allows the holder of the certificate of purchase to begin serving notice of expiration of the right of redemption on the person in possession and the person in whose name the parcel is taxed after one year and nine months from the date of sale.

Property owners may already be behind on taxes, and notices can be missed because the property changed hands, was inherited, or the mortgage was recently paid off. Unpaid property taxes can put a home at risk. In practice, that makes the county treasurer’s office the first stop for anyone who is confused about a tax bill, worried about delinquency, or trying to understand whether a parcel has moved toward sale.
