BVU's Battle at the Lake Tournament Draws Youth, Families to Storm Lake Campus
Boys and girls from 4th grade through adult competed in BVU's Battle at the Lake 3-on-3 tournament Saturday, turning the Storm Lake campus into a community basketball festival.

Buena Vista University's campus turned into a regional basketball destination Saturday when the Battle at the Lake 3-on-3 tournament drew competitors ranging from fourth graders to adults to Storm Lake, filling BVU's athletic facilities with players, coaches, and families from across the area.
The tournament, held March 28, organized participants into separate brackets for boys and girls in grades 4 through 12 as well as open adult divisions, giving the event the scope of a multigenerational festival as much as a competitive athletic contest. BVU's campus departments and event sponsors coordinated to supply referees, concessions, and prize packages, keeping registration costs accessible for families throughout Buena Vista County.
Tournament organizers worked with local schools and youth organizations in the lead-up to the event, tapping established networks to drive sign-ups and recruit volunteer staff. That coordination reflects a deliberate strategy at BVU: use campus facilities as a gathering point that connects the university not just to Storm Lake proper but to the broader county.
The economic reach of the event extended beyond the court. Out-of-town participants and their families filled local restaurants and supported retail businesses across Storm Lake, providing the kind of short-term economic activity that recurring campus events steadily generate for the city.
For younger competitors stepping onto a university court for the first time, the day offered something harder to quantify. Walking the same hallways and competing in the same facilities used by BVU's intercollegiate athletes gives youth players and their parents a concrete picture of what college life looks like, creating recruiting touchpoints while reinforcing BVU's role as a civic anchor in Storm Lake rather than a standalone institution.
The Battle at the Lake was part of a fuller slate of programming BVU hosted during the final week of March, which also included alumni gatherings, family-friendly events, and other athletic contests open to local spectators. BVU's online events calendar lists upcoming scheduling and registration details for future community programs.
