County Supervisors Consider 3 Percent Pay Increase for Officials
The Buena Vista County Board of Supervisors acknowledged a unanimous recommendation from the county compensation board to raise elected officials pay by 3 percent for the next fiscal year, and proposed new stipends for leadership roles. The recommendation will be considered as supervisors finalize the FY27 budget in March, a decision that could affect county payroll priorities and budget deliberations that matter to local taxpayers.

The Buena Vista County Board of Supervisors on December 16 acknowledged a unanimous recommendation from the seven member citizen compensation board to increase pay for elected county officials by 3 percent for the next fiscal year. The board also recommended continuing existing longevity bonuses and adding stipends for specific leadership positions, including two thousand dollars for the supervisors chair, five hundred dollars for the vice chair, and five thousand dollars for the auditor when that office serves as budget director.
The compensation panel based its recommendation on comparisons to Iowa State Association of Counties rankings, consumer price indexes, and local cost of living data. Members of the commission presented the package as a data informed adjustment to keep elected pay in line with regional trends and inflation measures.
Supervisors did not adopt the recommendation immediately. Under county procedures the board must act on the compensation report before certifying the FY27 budget in March, and supervisors retain authority to accept, modify, or reject any portion of the proposal. County officials said final decisions on pay changes will be folded into upcoming budget hearings where payroll impacts will be weighed alongside other spending priorities.
For residents, the outcome will influence the county payroll baseline and factor into broader fiscal planning for the coming year. Any added personnel costs will be reflected in the FY27 budget documents that shape levy rates, service levels, and resource allocation across county departments. The stipends for leadership roles would concentrate additional compensation in a small number of offices, while the across the board increase would raise pay for all elected positions.
The compensation board recommendation highlights the role of citizen advisory bodies in setting public pay and the need for transparent budget deliberations. Supervisors are expected to discuss the recommendation further during the budget process leading up to the March certification date, giving residents an opportunity to follow public meetings and review proposed budget documents before final votes.
