County Supervisors Review Funding Requests, Road Projects, Property Purchase

The Buena Vista County Board of Supervisors convenes at 8 30 a m in the boardroom today for a packed agenda that combines routine business with several items that carry policy and budgetary significance. Early in the session County Engineer Bret Wilkinson will deliver an update on the Platinum Crush Road Project and provide the Secondary Road Report. The meeting opens with a public comment period at 8 45 a m.

A series of FY 27 funding requests from local organizations are scheduled between 9 15 a m and 11 05 a m. Presenters include Colleen Schwanz of the Buena Vista County Soil and Water Conservation, Julie Edwards of Upper Des Moines Opportunity, Alyssa Petersen of Iowa Lakes Corridor, Hugh Lively and Cindy Voss of RIDES, Suana Wessender of the Newell Historical Society, and representatives of the Buena Vista Library Association. The funding requests cover conservation programs transit services social supports economic development historical preservation and library operations. How the board responds will affect service levels for residents who rely on nonprofits for transportation food and other supports and will factor into the county budget process for fiscal year 27.

At 8 55 a m Auditor Susan Lloyd will present a request for donated time for an employee. At 10 15 a m Mike Sandhoff of the Compensation Board will present FY 27 salary recommendations for elected officials, and the board will formally acknowledge receipt of those recommendations as an action item. Compensation board recommendations will inform budget planning and set parameters for elected official pay in the coming year.

A notable business item for decision is a purchase agreement for the property at 315 E. 5th Street, Storm Lake, with an authorization on the agenda to issue a check upon closing and to allow the board chair to sign necessary documents. The acquisition would alter county property holdings and may affect facility planning and operating costs.

Legal Counsel Katie Graham is scheduled to lead a possible closed session under Iowa Code Chapter 21.5 1 c for strategy with counsel regarding pending or imminent litigation from 11 15 a m to noon. The agenda lists submitted reports for acceptance including November Conservation Board minutes and November Buena Vista County Solid Waste Commission minutes.
