Newell, Alta and Albert City join National Night Out this year

Newell, Alta and Albert City will join National Night Out this year, putting three Buena Vista County communities into the same neighborhood-safety tradition when the observance comes up Tuesday, Aug. 4. In Alta, county law-enforcement volunteers are already lined up through the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Reserve Association, and Storm Lake’s own experience shows how large the night can grow: 15 block parties spread across town in 2024.

The local draw is straightforward. National Night Out is built around casual gatherings where residents can meet police, firefighters, ambulance crews and city officials, while also picking up public-safety ideas that fit small towns as well as larger ones. In Newell and Alta, that kind of face-to-face setting gives neighbors a chance to talk about emergency planning and concerns in a setting that is easier than a formal meeting room and more personal than a phone call.

Albert City’s participation extends the event beyond the county seat and into another small Buena Vista County community that will be using the night to strengthen ties with first responders.
