Newell Man Sentenced to 92 Years for 31 Convictions in Buena Vista County
Cristobal Del Angel Sr., 38, of Newell, was sentenced to 92 years in prison after a jury convicted him on all 31 counts, with parole eligibility not until the early 2080s.

Cristobal Del Angel Sr., 38, of Newell, will not be eligible for parole until at least the early 2080s after Judge Andrew Smith sentenced him March 10 in Buena Vista County District Court to a maximum of 92 years in prison, with a mandatory minimum of 55 years to be served before he can seek release.
The sentence followed a December jury trial in Storm Lake in which jurors deliberated for several hours before returning unanimous guilty verdicts on all 31 counts filed by the State. The convictions span some of the most serious charges under Iowa law, including continuous sexual abuse of a child, second-degree sexual abuse, lascivious acts with a child, indecent contact with a child, incest, domestic abuse assault causing injury, first-degree harassment, child endangerment, and going armed with intent. Four of the convictions are Class B felonies, each carrying a potential 25-year prison sentence; the remaining counts range from Class C and D felonies to aggravated misdemeanors.
The detailed breakdown reflects the scope of what prosecutors alleged: six counts each of indecent contact with a child, lascivious acts with a child, and incest; three counts each of domestic abuse assault causing injury and second-degree sexual abuse; two counts each of first-degree harassment and child endangerment; and additional single convictions for child endangerment causing bodily injury, going armed with intent, and continuous sexual abuse of a child.

The case began on Aug. 31, 2025, when the Buena Vista County Communications Center received a report of an armed individual threatening someone with a knife in the 200 block of Walnut Street in Newell. Deputies with the Buena Vista County Sheriff's Office responded, and the investigation that followed uncovered what prosecutors described as a pattern of repeated abuse within the household. Evidence presented at trial alleged that Del Angel repeatedly assaulted his wife and committed continuous sexual abuse of a minor child, with incidents stretching from 2020 through his arrest in August 2025.
The Buena Vista County Attorney's Office credited the sheriff's office, and specifically Sgt. William Sankey, for "exceptional investigative work in a complex and deeply sensitive case." County Attorney Paul Allen and Assistant County Attorney Ashley Herrig prosecuted the matter. Del Angel filed a motion for a new trial on Dec. 23, 2025, but the case proceeded to sentencing. He has since been transferred to state custody to begin serving his sentence.
