One dead, two injured in Highway 71 crash in Buena Vista County

One person died and two others were injured when an SUV crossed the center line on Highway 71 near mile marker 162 outside Storm Lake and struck a southbound car at about 5:04 a.m. Sunday. The driver who died was identified as 27-year-old Derren Mauricio of Alta, Iowa, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Iowa State Patrol said the northbound SUV, a Chevy Traverse, drifted into the southbound lane and hit a Jeep Wrangler. One report said the Traverse struck the Jeep’s driver-side headlight, then came to rest on the east shoulder of the road while the Jeep stopped on the west side of the roadway.

Highway 71 is one of Buena Vista County’s main corridors, carrying local traffic, farm equipment, commuters and visitors through the Storm Lake and Lakeside area. A crash at mile marker 162 disrupts more than the immediate scene: it hits a stretch of road that serves as a daily route for residents moving between rural roads, town traffic and regional travel.

The Iowa State Patrol has not publicly identified a cause for the center-line crossing in the reporting available. The early-morning timing, the two-vehicle impact and the rural location put the focus on the same factors investigators typically examine in serious crashes on two-lane highways, including lane departure, speed, distraction, fatigue or impairment.

The Highway 71 corridor has seen other deadly wrecks in Buena Vista County. In a separate crash report from 2023, two people died at Highway 71 and 550th Street east of Truesdale. That history makes Sunday’s collision part of a troubling pattern on a route many county residents use every day.

For Buena Vista County, the crash adds another reminder of how quickly a single center-line crossing can turn fatal on a rural highway with little margin for error.
