Storm Lake’s 3-1 loss to Sioux City West looked a lot like too many nights this spring, a competitive start that turned into another missed chance to break through. The Tornadoes had looks, but the Wolverines’ two first-half goals put Storm Lake in chase mode again.

The game ended in Sioux City with Storm Lake falling to 4-11, a record that reflects how often the Tornadoes have been in the middle of tight matches without getting the result they need. Sioux City West did enough early, then held the lead as Storm Lake tried to answer in the second half.

That pattern has shown up in other recent Northwest Iowa matchups. Storm Lake lost 1-0 to Western Christian in Hull, and coach Katie Voortmann said, “It was a close game back and forth.” Storm Lake also dropped a 1-0 game to Le Mars, where Voortmann said, “We had lots of opportunities and the girls played hard,” adding, “We will see them again for regionals (May 28 at Le Mars).”

Those results point to the clearest issue in Storm Lake’s season: the Tornadoes have been competitive enough to stay in games, but not sharp enough to turn pressure into goals or keep early deficits from compounding. Against Sioux City West, giving up two goals in the first half left little margin for error, and the 3-1 final showed how costly those slow starts can be.

The postseason now brings a quick chance to change that script. Girls soccer has been sanctioned in Iowa since 1998, and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s 2026 schedule puts Class 2A and 3A regional play on May 28. The state tournament is set for June 8-13, with Class 3A state play listed for June 9 and June 11.

For Storm Lake, that means another trip to Le Mars and another meeting with an opponent that has already pushed the Tornadoes to the edge. If Storm Lake wants to extend its season, the next step is simple: finish the chances that have been there and avoid the kind of first-half hole that Sioux City West was able to build and protect.
