Storm Lake Knights Expand Charity Work, Fund Local Services

The Storm Lake Knights of Columbus are stepping up their seasonal outreach on December 24, 2025, by converting recycled cans into cash and manpower for area social services. The council donated $1,000 raised through their Cans for a Cause recycling drive to the Siouxland Soup Kitchen in Sioux City and have begun monthly volunteer shifts to serve meals at that facility.

Locally the Knights partnered with St. Marys parish to support Hope For Life, the Storm Lake pregnancy resource center, delivering a $500 donation along with a large collection of diapers gathered by parishioners. Collection bins for ongoing recycling and supply drives are located in the Hy Vee and Fareway parking lots and near L&G Products, maintaining the council's recycling to charity model that funnels small community actions into larger social supports.

The contributions address two persistent needs in Buena Vista County and the surrounding region. The Siouxland Soup Kitchen serves people experiencing food insecurity across northwest Iowa, and the Knights new regular volunteer shifts add labor capacity at a time when many service providers face staffing and funding constraints. Hope For Life provides maternal and infant supplies and counseling, and the diaper collection eases immediate material hardship for local families who often struggle with the high cost of basic infant care.

The work illustrates how civic groups in small towns can mobilize local giving to shore up services that public safety nets do not fully cover.
