Blake Luy came home to Storm Lake with years of emergency-room experience and a job meant to give residents another place to be seen when their regular doctor cannot fit them in. At UnityPoint Clinic Family Health Center - Storm Lake, the Storm Lake High School graduate is part of a push to make care faster and closer to home for everyday illnesses and other non-emergency needs.

The urgent-care setup at 2015 West 5th Street accepts walk-ins, and same-day appointments may be available. UnityPoint lists hours there as Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., with Tuesday hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Patients do not have to be established with the clinic, and directory listings show the site accepts self-pay patients and those without insurance. Luy said he sees himself as another avenue for patients to be seen, and that urgent care is meant to work alongside primary care, not replace it. He also described urgent care as a bridge between the emergency room and a family-care doctor, a role that matters in a rural community where people often need timely care without a full ER visit.

The setup is designed to ease pressure on busy primary-care providers while still keeping serious cases where they belong. For life-threatening emergencies, patients should still go to the emergency room. But for the kinds of illnesses and minor concerns that can clog up schedules and send families searching for help after hours, the clinic gives Storm Lake another option. Leaders also hope the service will eventually grow into weekend availability.

Luy’s background fits the job. He graduated from Storm Lake High School in 2010, earned his master’s degree and nurse practitioner credentials at Briar Cliff University, and spent 11 years as an emergency-room nurse at Loring Hospital in Sac City and Buena Vista Regional Medical Center. He also worked as a traveling nurse in New Hampshire, Kentucky and California, where he saw how health care needs can change from place to place.

His return carries a hometown connection as well as a practical one. Luy’s mother, Beverly Henson, lives in Storm Lake, his father lives in Early, and his grandparents were well known locally. On his UnityPoint provider page, Luy said he is excited to practice at UnityPoint Clinic Family Health Center - Storm Lake and serve Storm Lake’s diverse populations and cultures. For Buena Vista County, that means one more local clinician, one more same-day option and a shorter path between a health problem and treatment.
