Storm Lake Pressure Defense Forces Turnovers, Nets 20th Win, Heads to Substate
Storm Lake’s pressure defense turned Thursday night’s game at Tornado Fieldhouse into a 75-40 rout of Humboldt, the Tornadoes’ 20th win as Cam Boyd poured in 31 points.

Storm Lake High School leaned on an aggressive pressure defense Thursday night at Tornado Fieldhouse to force turnovers, convert them into transition points and roll past Humboldt 75-40 for the Tornadoes’ 20th victory of the season. The win leaves Storm Lake at 20-2 and sets up a home substate test Monday when the Tornadoes host Denison-Schleswig at 7 p.m.
The defensive pivot was decisive after a cautious first half; Storm Lake led just 31-21 at the break before ramping up full-court intensity that “forced turnovers and converted them into transition points,” flipping momentum in the third quarter. The third-ranked characterization used in local coverage reflected how the Tornadoes answered a tight contest by turning defense directly into offense.
Cam Boyd carried the offensive load in the second half, finishing with 31 points and an electric third quarter. Boyd made 9-of-16 field-goal attempts for the game, hit 3-of-4 from behind the arc, and sank 10-of-12 free throws; 14 of his points came in the third quarter as Storm Lake “made all nine of their shots in the 3rd quarter, scoring 26 points in the process to break the game wide open.” Storm Lake shot 58 percent as a team, and Boyd led four Tornadoes in double figures alongside Tim Yanga (14), David William (11) and Garbieno Weno (10, all coming in the second half).
Humboldt was paced by Cade Birdsell, who hit six 3-pointers and finished with 20 points in the loss. The Wildcats fall to 13-9 and will face Algona Monday in their first tourney game, while Storm Lake uses the blowout and the 20-2 record to carry momentum into the Denison-Schleswig matchup at Tornado Fieldhouse.

Head coach Evan Franzmeier’s game plan centered on pressure defense and finishing in transition; local coverage noted the defensive surge “gave coach Evan Franzmeier plenty to like” and posted audio from Franzmeier as part of the game coverage. Fans who cannot attend Monday’s substate contest can follow action on Mix 101.7 KAYL and via video stream at stormlakeradio.com, maintaining community access to the game-day experience beyond the stands.
With a third-quarter clinic and a 75-40 final, Storm Lake advances toward substate play in clear form: a 20th win, efficient 58-percent shooting and a roster that produced four double-figure scorers. The Tornadoes’ pressure defense and Boyd’s shooting put Buena Vista County’s most successful team of the season on course, and Storm Lake will look to translate Thursday night’s momentum into a win when Denison-Schleswig visits Monday at 7 p.m.
