Storm Lake Tornadoes Reach Class 3A Semifinals for First Time in 46 Years
Storm Lake's boys basketball team reached the state semifinals for the first time in 46 years, outlasting Solon 68-60 in overtime behind Cameron Boyd's 21 points.
Forty-six years of waiting ended in Des Moines on Sunday night when the Storm Lake Tornadoes outscored Solon 12-4 in overtime to win their IHSAA Class 3A quarterfinal 68-60 and punch a ticket to the state semifinals.
The game appeared headed for regulation defeat before Cameron Boyd tied it at 56 to force the extra frame. Storm Lake seized control from there, turning a deadlocked contest into a dominant overtime performance that sent the Tornadoes to the final four for the first time since 1980.
Boyd finished as the team's leading scorer with 21 points. Jaidyn Coon, a Creighton signee, posted a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds to give Storm Lake two players above 20 points in a game that required every basket.

The victory sets up a Class 3A semifinal matchup against ADM, scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. tip on Wednesday, March 11, in Des Moines. ADM will be the Tornadoes' toughest test yet on a run that has already rewritten Storm Lake High School history.
