Garbieno Weno turned the Spirit Lake Invitational into a statement day for Storm Lake, breaking the school record in the 200 meters with a 21.8 and winning the 400 meters in 50.56 seconds. The 200 mark edged the old school standard of 21.9 by a tenth of a second, a small margin that carried real weight in Storm Lake track history and showed Weno pushing the program’s sprint standard higher again.

Weno was not done there. He also finished second in the 100 meters in 10.88 seconds, giving Storm Lake a scorer who could pile up points in three separate sprint events on the same day. That kind of versatility matters late in the season, when invitational points can swing on one athlete’s ability to contend in more than one race and when a single standout performance can hint at bigger team possibilities ahead.

The Tornado boys backed Weno with strong work across the lineup. Joel Ramirez-Parra won the 3,200 meters in 10:13.75, while Alex Ortega placed third in 10:43.94. David William finished second in the 400 meters in 52.64 seconds, and Riak Tut took eighth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 19.18 seconds. Storm Lake also collected fourth-place finishes in the shuttle hurdle relay at 1:16.18, the distance medley relay in 4:02.57, the 4x200 relay in 1:35.58 and the 4x100 relay in 44.13 seconds. The 4x400 relay was sixth in 3:43.31, and the 4x800 relay placed eighth in 9:43.81.

Storm Lake finished fourth in the meet with 94 points, behind Spirit Lake’s 132, in a field that rewarded balance as much as top-end speed. A week earlier at the Unity Christian Invitational, Weno had already won the 100 meters in 11.25 and the 400 in 50.47, while Ramirez-Parra took both the 1,600 and 3,200. Put together, those results suggest the Tornado boys are building more than a one-meet burst. They are starting to look like a group with depth in the sprints, distance races and relays, and Weno’s record run gave Storm Lake a clear local milestone to measure that rise.
