Asheville Celebrates Arbor Day April 11 in River Arts District
Asheville is giving away free tree seedlings April 11 at a River Arts District celebration aimed at restoring riverbanks and expanding the urban canopy hit hard by Hurricane Helene.

Free tree seedlings, riparian guided walks, and hands-on planting demonstrations come to the River Arts District on Saturday, April 11, when the City of Asheville, the Urban Forestry Commission, and RiverLink host a public Arbor Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at two sites along Riverside Drive.
Programming runs simultaneously at the Craven Street Boat Launch (192 Riverside Drive) and The Smokestack (91 Riverside Drive). Seedlings are free but go on a first-come basis, making early arrival worthwhile. Beyond the giveaway, attendees can join riparian zone walk-and-talks, watch tree planting demonstrations, and learn how to care for trees that self-seed in yards and along the riverbank. Organizers will also share updates on the City's Urban Forest Master Plan, currently in production.
The event lands in a neighborhood the French Broad has tested hard. The City's announcement ties the programming directly to Hurricane Helene and other climate events that stressed Asheville's urban trees and river corridors. Riparian planting is the tool the City is reaching for: roots anchoring riverbanks reduce erosion and slow stormwater runoff during heavy rain events; expanded canopy overhead moderates temperatures and filters air in a district that draws significant foot traffic and vehicle exhaust. The City's stated restoration goals include improved bank stabilization, water quality, wildlife habitat recovery, and broader urban canopy coverage along a stretch of the RAD that has been a focus of active restoration work since the storm.
The event is free. Organizers recommend registering in advance through RiverLink or the City's event pages. Wear footwear suited for riverside terrain and bring a reusable water bottle. For parking, use the free public lot north of Craven Street; additional spaces are available along Riverside Drive and just south of Jean Webb Park. The City asks attendees to leave the Boat Launch lot open for people putting boats in the water that day.

The Arbor Day programming wraps at 1 p.m., but the RAD Sip and Shop, hosted by dozens of galleries and studios throughout the district, runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The City put it plainly in its invitation: "Come for the trees, stay for the art."
Thunderstorms will cancel the event; light rain will not. The City will post any last-minute updates or cancellations on its Instagram and Facebook accounts, and if a rain date becomes necessary, organizers say it will be announced later.
Residents who want a deeper role beyond April 11 can submit input on the Urban Forest Master Plan at publicinput.com/avltrees. Volunteer opportunities through the Urban Forestry Commission are also listed on the City's news page at ashevillenc.gov.
