Asheville's Chai Pani Owners Named James Beard Outstanding Restaurateur Finalists

Meherwan and Molly Irani, the Asheville couple behind Chai Pani Restaurant Group, were named finalists for the 2026 James Beard Award in the Outstanding Restaurateur category, placing them among the most closely watched names in the country's top culinary honors.

The Iranis launched the original Chai Pani in Asheville in 2009 and have since grown the group into multiple concepts, including the fast-casual Botiwalla brand. The Outstanding Restaurateur category recognizes the operators themselves rather than a single establishment, distinguishing the 2026 finalist designation from the Outstanding Restaurant award Chai Pani won in 2022.

Asheville is not the only Buncombe County name in this year's finalist field. Taylor Montgomery of Montgomery Sky Farm also earned a spot as a finalist in the Best Chef: Southeast category, continuing a pattern of local culinary figures drawing national attention.

Meherwan Irani has accumulated semifinalist and nominee status across multiple prior Beard cycles. The 2022 Outstanding Restaurant win established Chai Pani as a benchmark for Indian street food in American dining; the 2026 finalist nod extends that recognition to the Iranis as operators, acknowledging the sourcing, staffing, and community investment that shape the broader restaurant group.

For Buncombe County's food economy, the implications reach beyond the Chai Pani dining room. James Beard nominations historically generate increased media coverage, higher reservation volume, and sustained tourist interest. Local farms and food producers that supply nominated restaurants gain visibility alongside them.
