Emergency Responders to Honor Reems Creek Fire Chief Chris Dorsey with I-40 Procession
Chris Dorsey, Reems Creek fire chief, died unexpectedly March 24. Emergency responders lined I-40 overpasses Wednesday as his remains returned from Winston-Salem.

Reems Creek Fire Chief Chris Dorsey, who also served as an assistant supervisor and paramedic with Buncombe County Emergency Services, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 24. He was 11 years into his service with Buncombe County Emergency Services when he passed, and on Wednesday, March 25, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol led a procession along I-40 from Winston-Salem to bring him home, with emergency responders stationed on designated overpasses and bridges along the route.
Dorsey carried dual responsibilities that few in the county's emergency services network hold simultaneously: leading the Reems Creek Fire Department while also serving as a paramedic assistant supervisor for Buncombe County EMS. Before those roles, he gave years of service to the Woodfin Fire Department, the Weaverville Fire Department, and the NC Urban Search and Rescue Task Force of Buncombe County.
Taylor Jones, Buncombe County's Director of Emergency Services, described a leader whose influence extended well beyond the fireground. "Chief Dorsey was a dedicated public safety professional," Jones said. "As the Reems Creek Fire Chief and Buncombe County EMS paramedic assistant supervisor, he served with integrity, compassion, and enthusiasm. He was committed to serving his community with a servant's heart and always aimed to make a positive difference. He took the time to mentor others, foster connections, and support those around him. He was truly valued and well-regarded by his colleagues, partners, and friends."
The Reems Creek Fire Department acknowledged the weight of the loss on its own personnel. "This has impacted all of us, both personally and professionally, and it is important that we take time to process the event together," the department said in a statement.
The Asheville Fire Department, whose jurisdiction borders Reems Creek's territory, issued its own tribute. "His loss leaves a profound void in our hearts and in the emergency services family," the department wrote. "Your legacy of service will never be forgotten."
Funeral arrangements for Chief Dorsey are being handled by Groce Funeral Home. No cause of death has been released.
