Free Propane Drive Helps Swannanoa Residents Recover from Storm
Blossman Gas held a propane distribution event on Dec. 19 at the closed Ingles site in Swannanoa to help residents still recovering from Tropical Storm Helene obtain fuel for heating and cooking. The drive addressed immediate needs where stores and normal services remain disrupted, and highlighted ongoing gaps in access to basic utilities for vulnerable households.

Blossman Gas staged a propane drive at the closed Ingles location in Swannanoa on Dec. 19, offering fill ups from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to residents affected by Tropical Storm Helene and others needing fuel for heating and cooking. The company expected to serve hundreds of residents as part of continuing recovery efforts in neighborhoods where storm damage has left retail services and infrastructure impaired.
Participants were required to bring their own propane cylinders. The distribution was limited to up to 90 pounds of propane transported in a passenger vehicle, or one 100 pound cylinder transported in a truck or open trailer. Officials said all federal, state and local codes governing the filling and transportation of propane cylinders were followed and enforced to reduce safety risks during the event.
Propane is a primary source of heat and stovetop cooking for many Buncombe County homes, and interruptions to supply can quickly become a public health concern during cold weather. Loss of safe heating increases the risk of hypothermia for older adults, young children and people with chronic illness. Disruptions also force people to turn to unsafe alternatives for warmth and cooking, which can raise the risk of carbon monoxide exposure and household fires.

The drive underscored persistent social equity challenges in storm recovery. Residents without personal vehicles, those with limited mobility, and low income households face barriers to accessing temporary distributions that require transported cylinders. Community organizers and local leaders have flagged the need for more distributed, accessible fuel assistance options including delivery, multilingual outreach, and targeted support for seniors and people with disabilities.
As Buncombe County continues recovery, the propane distribution illustrates both the value of private sector relief actions and the limits of ad hoc responses to systemic gaps. Longer term planning that coordinates emergency fuel supplies with transportation assistance and social services will be needed to protect the county's most vulnerable residents during future storms.
