Google announced Friday it will invest more than $1 billion over the next two years to expand its data center in Lenoir, a facility that has operated in Caldwell County since 2007 and currently employs about 400 people.

The investment marks the second major expansion announcement at the Lenoir site in as many years. In 2024, Google committed $600 million to the campus, a deal that came with performance-based incentive grants from the City of Lenoir and Caldwell County covering 50% of real property and 85% of personal property costs over 20 years. Whether similar incentives are attached to the new $1 billion commitment remains unclear.

Google intends to grow the campus and potentially hire additional employees, according to the company's announcement. The Lenoir facility supports some of the tech giant's most widely used products, including Maps, Photos, Search, Workspace, and YouTube. Since building the data center, Google has invested $1.2 billion in North Carolina and generated $13.1 billion in statewide economic activity in 2024 alone, according to its annual impact report.

Alongside the capital investment, Google announced a $2 million Energy Impact Fund developed in partnership with Blue Ridge Community Action, Blue Ridge Energy, and Advanced Energy. The fund targets energy affordability, weatherization upgrades, and efficiency improvements for low- to moderate-income households and K-12 schools in Caldwell County. It will also expand existing community solar programs to reduce energy costs and broaden renewable access across the county.

Jon Jacob, director of marketing for Blue Ridge Energy, called Google's support "a perfect reflection of our cooperative spirit: members helping members, supported by a partner who shares our commitment to making life better for our local community."

Google also announced a three-year, $270,000 grant to Communities In Schools of Caldwell County.

Lenoir Mayor Joseph Gibbons said the investment signals a sustained commitment to the region. "This funding will enhance our workforce, expand economic development opportunities, and ensure North Carolina remains a leader in innovation. I want to thank Google for investing in Lenoir and helping to build a stronger future for every resident of our great state," Gibbons said in the announcement.

Caldwell County Commission Chairman Randy Church added that investments of this scale are "critical for strengthening our community" and "will bring new opportunities for local workers and help drive long-term economic success in our region."

The announcement arrives as data centers have become a flashpoint across Western North Carolina. Surging demand tied to artificial intelligence has accelerated facility buildouts statewide, while residents in affected communities have raised concerns about energy consumption, environmental impact, and quality of life. The Energy Impact Fund is explicitly designed to address the energy burden that large-scale computing facilities can place on local grids and utility customers.

North Carolina has attracted several major data center commitments in recent months. Microsoft resumed work on $1 billion in projects across Catawba County and is developing a separate facility in Person County on 1,350 acres purchased for $27 million. Amazon broke ground last year on a $10 billion, 20-building campus in Richmond County. Google's Lenoir expansion adds to a mounting ledger of infrastructure investment reshaping the state's economic geography.
