I-26 Widening Completion Pushed to January 2027 After Scope Changes
I-26 widening between the Asheville interchange and the airport is now expected in January 2027, delaying relief for drivers and extending construction impacts for local businesses.

The I-26 widening and improvement project between the Asheville I-26/I-40 interchange and the Asheville Regional Airport is now "expected in January 2027," Nathan Moneyham, NCDOT area construction engineer, told a Jan 9 meeting of the Council of Independent Business Owners. The revised finish date reflects scope changes to the project, including the addition of the Exit 35 interchange, and pushes back when commuters and freight traffic will see the full benefits of the work.
Moneyham said the timeline shift stems in part from design and right-of-way adjustments tied to the expanded scope, as well as cost changes that have affected the NCDOT’s ability to sequence corridor work. The project is part of a larger slate of regional improvements that also includes I-40 pavement replacement work and widening segments on I-240, all of which compete for limited state transportation funds and construction capacity.
Local business owners and residents at the Council of Independent Business Owners meeting pressed for clarity on funding and the status of storm-related repairs. Moneyham reported that about 80% of Helene-related repairs were completed from the DOT perspective, and he described the challenge of balancing Buncombe County priorities against competing statewide transportation needs. Questions about final costs and right-of-way acquisition remain as officials refine schedules and coordinate utility relocations.
For drivers and local commerce, the extension means an extra season of traffic shifts, lane closures, and construction staging near the airport corridor. Freight operators that rely on I-26 for regional deliveries should plan for ongoing traffic pattern changes, and businesses around Exit 35 can expect prolonged construction impacts as work on the new interchange proceeds. NCDOT’s ongoing right-of-way work could also affect property access in sections where acquisitions or easements are required.
The Jan 9 update places the I-26 corridor work into the broader funding and scheduling pressures facing state transportation planners. Moneyham’s briefing highlighted how a single scope change - in this case the Exit 35 interchange - can ripple through timelines and budgets when multiple major projects are underway in a region.
Residents and commuters should anticipate continued construction through the revised schedule and monitor NCDOT announcements for traffic advisories, right-of-way notices, and any further adjustments to the timeline. The delayed completion shifts the horizon for congestion relief, but also reflects an expanded project footprint that aims to improve long-term connectivity between Asheville and the airport.
