McDonald's Cup Sleeve Campaign Raises $150K for Asheville Recovery Nonprofit
McDonald's WNC cup sleeve campaign raised $150,000 for Mountain BizWorks, which will direct the funds to Asheville-area businesses still recovering from Hurricane Helene.

Mountain BizWorks, the Asheville-based nonprofit that has been a financial lifeline for small businesses across Western North Carolina, received a $150,000 check from McDonald's this week, the result of a regional cup sleeve promotion tied directly to Hurricane Helene recovery efforts.
The funds came from McDonald's WNC cup sleeve promotion, which allowed customers to purchase a $5 cup sleeve that came with a large soft drink, tea or lemonade. The campaign, branded under the banner "McDonald's Restaurants Offering Drink Sleeves for Helene Recovery," converted everyday fast food transactions at registers across the region into a six-figure relief contribution.
Officials from Mountain BizWorks say the funds will go to businesses impacted by Helene. The nonprofit has been one of the most active organizations in the region providing capital and technical assistance to small businesses since the storm tore through Western North Carolina in the fall of 2024, leaving widespread destruction across Buncombe and surrounding counties.

The $150,000 figure places this among the more substantial single corporate contributions directed specifically toward business recovery in the region. While Mountain BizWorks has not yet detailed how the funds will be distributed, whether through grants, loans, or another mechanism, the organization's existing infrastructure for reaching Hurricane Helene-affected businesses positions it to move the money into the local economy relatively quickly.
For the dozens of small businesses in and around Asheville still working to rebuild operations, restock inventory, or simply keep their doors open more than a year after the storm, the McDonald's contribution represents a concrete infusion from an unlikely but effective source: the paper sleeve wrapped around a cold drink.
