Delta State ag aviation program gets $1.75 million federal grant

Delta State University’s agricultural aviation pathway secured $1.75 million in federal money, a direct investment in a Cleveland County training program tied to Mississippi Delta farm work and specialized jobs. The grant is aimed at a field that covers crop spraying, precision application and other aircraft-based services that matter to local growers and operators.

Delta State announced the funding on March 2, and U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith’s office said three days later that the money was included in the FY2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Bill, which was signed into law in February. That places the award inside a larger federal spending package rather than a one-time campus gift, and it links the program to Washington budget decisions that affect workforce development across the region.

At Delta State, the work centers on the Agricultural Aviation Operations Career Pathway and the Aerial Applicator Pilot Training Program, which the university describes as a certificate program. The school also offers commercial aviation programs, including a Bachelor of Commercial Aviation in Flight Operations, giving students a broader route into the aviation industry while keeping the agricultural track focused on the needs of field service and farm support.

The local workforce angle is already visible in the program’s output. Delta State said it celebrated the graduation of 10 students from the Agricultural Aviation Operations Career Pathway on May 18, 2026. The university said in November 2025 that a new class of aspiring ag pilots was taking flight, and a June 2025 report said Delta State certified a new crop of ag pilots. Farm Progress has said the aerial applicator program turns pilots into skilled agricultural aviators in just seven months.

The grant also builds on earlier federal support. In November 2024, Delta State received a $1 million federal grant to acquire a flight simulator for the program. AerialFire identified the equipment as an Air Tractor 802 simulator and said it would be the first of its kind supporting Delta State’s agricultural aircraft operations career pathway. The Mississippi Apprenticeship Program has described the ag pilot apprenticeship as beginning with a $2 million investment, underscoring how the pathway has been built in stages around hands-on training, industry demand and the need for qualified agricultural pilots in the South Delta.
