Grandma Stand Returns to Downtown McKinney Farmers Market This Spring
Grandma Nancy greeted visitors at Chestnut Square on March 14, bringing free wisdom and a listening ear every Saturday through May 30.

The Grandma Stand made its spring return to the McKinney Farmers Market at Chestnut Square on Saturday, March 14, with Grandma Nancy welcoming visitors during the 9 to 11 a.m. window that McKinney Main Street has scheduled every Saturday through May 30.
The pop-up listening booth offers what organizers describe as "the free wisdom, empathy, and listening ear that you can only get from a loving grandparent," and is designed to encourage "meaningful moments of connection that support overall well-being." Anyone who stops by can chat at no cost, with McKinney Main Street framing the experience around the idea that "a simple conversation can brighten a day."
The program traces its origins to 2012, when creator Mike Matthews set up a small street-corner booth in New York City to connect his 95-year-old grandmother, Eileen Matthews, with passersby through friendly, face-to-face video chats. After Eileen passed away in 2018 at age 102, Matthews revived the concept with a bright purple pop-up stand, Eileen's favorite color, now hosted by a rotating group of grandmas from around the country.
McKinney Main Street organized the spring run in partnership with the McKinney Farmers Market, with the City of McKinney posting the announcement. Grandma Nancy was the featured volunteer at the March 14 opening; the schedule running through May 30 means the stand will be present at Chestnut Square on Saturday mornings for more than two months of the spring market season.
