Plano Police Bust Retail Theft Ring, Seize Over $142,000 in Cash and Stolen Goods
A $2,500 gaming electronics theft in Plano snowballed into "Operation Mario Kart," netting $42K in cash and over $100K in stolen goods from an Irving home.

What started as a seemingly minor shoplifting case in Plano grew into a months-long, multijurisdictional takedown that ended with a suspect in custody, $42,000 in cash confiscated, and a cache of stolen gaming merchandise worth more than $100,000 hauled out of an Irving home.
The monthslong initiative, dubbed "Operation Mario Kart," ended on March 5 when officers executed a search and arrest warrant at a home in Irving. The Plano Police Department announced the results in a March 20 social media post.
The investigation began in 2025 after Plano Police Detective A. Cole began looking into what appeared to be a routine theft of approximately $2,500 in gaming electronics and accessories. The investigation pivoted when detectives determined the items were being stolen for a "fence," an individual who buys stolen property to resell for profit. What first began as a small theft quickly expanded into a major multi-agency investigation.
Cole partnered with a Walmart Global Security investigator who helped identify the individual buying the stolen property to sell for a profit. The investigation ultimately led law enforcement to a residence in Irving, Texas, where the suspect was believed to be storing the stolen goods. During the raid, investigators seized $42,000 in cash and a massive cache of stolen goods valued at more than six figures.
The case expanded into a large-scale operation involving the Plano Police General Crimes and Special Investigative Services units, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Allen Police Department. Private-sector partners also proved critical to cracking the case. According to Plano police, Nintendo of America and loss-prevention teams from Walmart, Target, and Kroger assisted in identifying the suspect.

On March 5, search and arrest warrants were executed and the suspect was taken into custody on charges of organized retail theft. The suspect's name has not been released.
Plano police credited the breadth of the collaboration as essential to the outcome. "Investigations of this scale are only possible through strong cooperation and shared commitment," the department said. "Due to their hard work, a major organized retail theft suspect has been taken off the streets."
The combined recovery of $42,000 in cash and more than $100,000 in stolen property brings the total seized in the operation to approximately $142,000. No additional arrests have been announced, and it remains unclear whether further warrants are planned as the investigation continues.
