Two Anna men arrested in fatal shooting of Wylie teen
Two Anna men were jailed after the killing of 17-year-old Ty’Ron Kuria near Dodd Park, a case that has shaken families around Wylie.

Two Anna men were arrested in Anna after Wylie police tied them to the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Ty’Ron Kuria near Dodd Park, turning a park-area homicide into a regional capital-murder case that has rattled families in Wylie and beyond.
Police said Jermey Butler and Valquan Harris were wanted on capital murder warrants and were taken into custody around 12:06 p.m. on April 20. Officers transported both men to the Wylie city jail as investigators continued building a case around the April 16 shooting death of Kuria, whose killing happened near the northeast corner of Country Club Road and Park Boulevard.
Wylie police responded shortly after 6 p.m. on April 16 to reports of shots fired. Witnesses later told investigators they heard several shots and saw several males running away in different directions. Officers found Kuria in a nearby field with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital and later died.
The death of a 17-year-old near a public park has raised concerns well beyond the criminal case itself. Kuria was a junior at Wylie ISD’s Achieve Academy, and Principal Janet Wyatt said counseling services were made available for students, with additional counselors placed on campus to help them cope.
Police also asked residents to upload any video or photos from the scene to a digital-evidence portal as detectives and the Crime Scene Unit searched for evidence. Investigators warned against spreading rumors on social media, saying it does nothing to bring justice for Kuria’s family.

The case widened further when a third suspect was later arrested, bringing the total to three people charged in the killing. Wylie police said the investigation received help from Anna police, Allen Police SWAT, Richardson Police Department SWAT and the United States Marshals Service.
Chief Anthony Henderson said investigators worked daily to determine what happened near Dodd Park and that their work led to the arrests. He said the department would keep investigating until the case is ready to be sent to the Collin County District Attorney’s Office.
Under Texas law, capital murder is among the most serious charges. If prosecutors do not seek the death penalty, a defendant who was younger than 18 at the time of the offense can face life in prison with parole eligibility only after 40 calendar years. Collin County prosecutors have already shown they are prepared to move aggressively in juvenile homicide cases, after Greg Willis announced a separate McKinney teen capital murder conviction in April 2026.
For Wylie, the case is no longer just about arrests. It is about a teenager killed near a park, a school community forced to absorb the loss, and a city waiting to see what prosecutors and police uncover next.
