Ty’Ron Kuria, 17, was killed after gunfire broke out Thursday evening at Dodd Park in Wylie, turning a neighborhood park into the center of a homicide investigation. Police said officers responded shortly after 6 p.m. to reports of shots fired near the northeast corner of Country Club Road and Park Boulevard, where they found Kuria in a nearby field with multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers performed lifesaving measures at the scene and rushed Kuria to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Witnesses told investigators they heard several shots and saw a group of males running away in different directions, a detail that has left detectives trying to sort out how many people were involved and what led to the shooting.

Police have not identified a motive and have not confirmed whether Kuria knew the people who fled the area. The case remains open, and investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the Wylie Police Department at 972-442-8171 or submit an anonymous tip through the city’s online and mobile tip options.

The killing hit especially hard because Kuria was a teenager tied to local schools and youth life in Wylie. Wylie ISD confirmed he was a student at Wylie High School and a former student at Achieve Academy. Achieve Academy said counseling services were available and that additional counselors would be on campus to help students process the news. Kuria’s family is grieving and searching for answers, and his aunt said he was supposed to graduate next year.

The shooting also raised uneasy questions for families who expect Dodd Park to be a place for baseball, cricket and soccer, not an active crime scene. The city lists the park at 1501 Selma Lane with two backstops, one cricket ground and two soccer practice fields. Wylie says its park system includes more than 700 acres of parkland and open space and 19 miles of trails, making the violence there feel especially out of place in a community built around recreation.

The broader context makes the case resonate beyond one park. Collin County’s population was estimated at 1,297,179 in 2025, and 24.0% of residents are under 18. For a county with so many children and teens, Kuria’s death is another stark reminder that youth safety now reaches beyond school hallways and into the places where families gather after class and after work.
