Copperas Cove Independent School District is moving beyond a traditional local footprint with Central Texas Innovation Academy, a virtual campus that will take a limited number of students in grades 3-12 from anywhere in Texas starting in the 2026-27 school year.

The district announced the academy on April 20, positioning it as a home-study option that still connects students to Copperas Cove ISD’s advanced academic programs. That makes the new campus different from standard online learning: CTIA students will not just log in for core classes, but will also be eligible for the district’s broader academic offerings, including dual credit and early college pathways.

District leaders said the goal is to give families more flexibility without separating students from the school community. Dr. Brent Hawkins, the superintendent, said the district has spent years building up its academic programs and wants to help students across Texas receive a quality education in the setting that best suits them. Dr. Amanda Crawley, deputy superintendent for instructional services, said the academy is aimed at students who need flexible schedules or a more comfortable school environment, and that Copperas Cove ISD wanted to welcome them into the full school community, not just offer core academics.

The academy also gives Copperas Cove ISD a statewide reach that could alter how the district is seen in Coryell County. Students who enroll in CTIA will be eligible for the district’s Career & Technical Education program, which includes more than 45 career programs in manufacturing, construction science, business, marketing, education and digital media. The district said students may also pursue dual-credit and early college opportunities that can lead to an associate degree or college-level industry certifications in fields such as business, criminal justice and agriculture.

The program comes with practical conditions. Students living inside Copperas Cove ISD boundaries will receive a laptop for schoolwork. Students who live outside the district may apply for a laptop scholarship while supplies last. Those out-of-district students can also take part in extracurricular activities, including fine arts and athletics, if they can provide their own transportation.

Copperas Cove ISD’s enrollment page ties the effort to staffing and budget planning for the 2026-27 school year, signaling that the academy is part of a wider push to grow enrollment and expand offerings. The district’s Vision 2029 plan, developed with the Texas Education Agency and Region 12 Education Service Center, frames that push as part of a mission to provide exceptional opportunities for each student. If CTIA draws students statewide, Copperas Cove could become not just a school district in Coryell County, but a destination for virtual education run from local ground.
