Copperas Cove ISD celebrated the opening of renovated baseball and softball fields with ceremonial first pitches and community recognition, the district says the event occurred Feb. 19, 2026, and members of the CCISD board of trustees were on hand for the first pitch. Superintendent Brent Hawkins told the board that the fields use synthetic surfacing and installation techniques he described as major-league quality: “We’ve got baseball and softball fields that major league quality folks put that down and so we’re in great shape there.”

The board approved the conversion of the fields in August 2025 and the renovation work proceeded under a bid described as "just a little over $2.1 million," with the district reporting the project paid for via its fund balance. The publicly held opening marked the start of what district materials called the opening pitches of the season at the newly updated facilities.

Work on the project included new field foundations, new curbing, new fencing, a new drainage system, synthetic surfacing and pitching areas, upgraded backstops and new bases, among other improvements. District presentations to trustees in a Feb. 3 workshop laid out the scope alongside a schedule of maintenance and replacement cycles that will govern upkeep of the new surfaces.

Those maintenance numbers are specific: weekly sweeping, deep cleaning twice a year and infield replacement every five years. Bulldawg Stadium turf was replaced in 2017 and carries a 30-year life expectancy, while tracks require resurfacing every five years and polyurethane replacement every 15 years. Trustees were reminded that the Bulldawg Stadium track was last resurfaced in 2014.

Concerns about Bulldawg Stadium were raised during the facilities presentation, including cracks and separations on the track curves, debris and dirt getting under the surface, ant infiltration and foliage growth. Coaches and student-athletes have reported increased shin splints tied to the track's hardness. At the workshop one speaker recommended a near-term response: “My recommendation is to address Bulldawg Stadium with the track, that we stay on the plan that was presented in 2025. We know that probably one more season is as much as we’re going to get out of Bulldawg Stadium, and we need to align our funding to ensure that we’re maximizing our efforts to improve facilities and our maintenance cycles.”

The ballfield ribbon-cutting comes as the district pursues broader capital work approved by voters in a recent $165 million bond package. Superintendent Hawkins highlighted the scale of the investment in students when describing the bond-funded projects that include a 75,000-square-foot Career and Technical Education Workforce Center with 55 classrooms and labs, campuswide renovations at Copperas Cove High School and Copperas Cove Junior High, cafeteria expansions including a new centralized cafeteria, Fairview/Jewell Elementary renovations, a Fine Arts wing renovation and construction of additional locker rooms. Hawkins said of voter support, “How many kids are going to benefit from the action of these voters and the things that they have done? I think it is exponential.”

A district social media post briefly referenced the conversion decision, posting: "... baseball and softball fields the school board approved converting ... 6+ + CopperasCove(50 . 6+ + Coppéras CovelSD . 6+ + CopersasCove" as community response circulated online. With the new turf down and first pitches thrown, district leaders now point to Bulldawg Stadium track work and alignment of maintenance funding as the next facilities priorities.
