Copperas Cove nonprofit helps veterans facing homelessness and hard times

A veteran in Copperas Cove who is short on clothes, food or a place to start can turn to Operation Stand Down Central Texas at 338 Cove Terrace Shopping Center, where the nonprofit focuses on veterans who have fallen on hard times. The group was created to assist homeless veterans and their families, and its mission is to provide immediate relief from the trauma and isolation of homelessness while making basic necessities available.

Operation Stand Down Central Texas, known locally as OSDCT, is rooted in Copperas Cove but serves the surrounding community as well. TexVet’s listing says the organization assists homeless veterans and their families, and it also directs people to a veterans crisis line. On its own website, OSDCT lists events, volunteering, needs, sponsorship and resources, giving neighbors and local businesses several ways to plug in beyond writing a check.

The need is not abstract. In 2023, OSDCT marked its tenth fall event at the National Guard Armory in Killeen, where visitors were welcomed from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. They received clothes, a hot meal, haircuts and other resources, with multiple community organizations contributing to the effort. The setup showed the kind of help many veterans need at once: immediate, practical support that can make a difficult week more manageable.

Joann Courtland, the organization’s director, said “the community comes together” to help those in need and urged people not to “carry it all” alone. That approach has made OSDCT part of the safety net for Coryell County and nearby Killeen, where veterans facing homelessness often need help with the basics before they can deal with benefits, transportation or longer-term housing issues.

FOX 44 described OSDCT as a Copperas Cove nonprofit focused on supporting veterans who have fallen on hard times, placing the organization within the town’s local identity rather than as a distant charity. For veterans, families, volunteers and local companies, the resource is concrete: a Copperas Cove address, a crisis-line referral, and a network that can turn donated time, clothes or sponsorships into help on the ground.
