Copperas Cove pitcher Janell Gray earns 6A athlete honor after dominant April
Janell Gray struck out 19 in a no-hitter and hit .600 in April, earning Class 6A athlete honors after a record-setting stretch for Copperas Cove.

Janell Gray’s April was the kind of month that changes how a school town talks about its pitcher. The Copperas Cove sophomore struck out 19 Shoemaker batters in a no-hitter, then closed the month batting .600 and earning Greater Texas Ford’s Class 6A Female Athlete of the Month honor.
Gray’s run came during a stretch that put Copperas Cove softball squarely in the Class 6A playoff picture. In an 8-4 win over Shoemaker, she struck out 12, allowed just three hits and three walks, and sealed the game with a three-run home run in the seventh inning. She later reached 300 career strikeouts in a 12-2 win over Temple, where she also went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Those numbers matter in Copperas Cove because Gray is more than a one-player story. She has also coached in the community, giving younger athletes a local example of what it looks like to work, improve and perform under pressure. For a town that follows Copperas Cove High School closely, her success has become part of the broader identity of the Lady Dawgs, a program built around local kids and familiar names.

The Lady Dawgs are coached by Alicia Crawford, with Jeaniel Pati and Paysee Crow serving as assistant coaches, and the program has benefited from the district’s new baseball and softball fields, which opened in February 2026. Copperas Cove ISD approved the conversion in August 2025 and paid for it through fund balance, adding another layer of investment to a sport that has already delivered a spring full of results.
Copperas Cove opened its playoff run with an 8-1 win over Mesquite Horn in the bi-district round, and Gray again set the tone with 11 strikeouts and a 3-for-4 night at the plate. For Coryell County, her honor from Greater Texas Ford and the district is more than a monthly award. It is a sign that one of the area’s most visible athletes is carrying Copperas Cove softball through a standout season while representing the community on the field and beyond it.
