Coryell County DA Extends Felony Indictment Deadlines, Updates Bond Procedures
DA Dusty Boyd extended the 90-day felony indictment deadline for Coryell County jail detainees after the March 16 Gatesville fire disrupted court operations.

Coryell County District Attorney Dusty Boyd extended the felony indictment deadline for detained defendants earlier this month, a procedural shift that directly alters bond and release timelines for people currently held in the county jail.
Boyd's office published a formal notice on the county website April 1, outlining the administrative extension of Texas's standard 90-day rule. Under that statute, the State must ordinarily indict a detained felony defendant within 90 days or face a mandatory bond review and potential release. Boyd's notice, citing a local standing order and continuing court disruptions, pushes that deadline further out.
The extension connects directly to the March 16 fire that gutted the west block of Gatesville's Historic Downtown Square. The blaze originated in the Gatesville Messenger building and destroyed four historic structures before crews could contain it. County Judge Roger Miller signed a local disaster declaration in response, unlocking state recovery assistance but also codifying the broader disruption to county operations, including court scheduling.
Boyd's notice provides specific procedural guidance for defense attorneys: where to file bond reduction motions, how to request personal recognizance bonds, and how to reach the DA's office for scheduling or deadline questions. The office is located at 203 South 7th Street in Gatesville and can be reached at 254-865-5911, extension 2267, or by email at districtattorney@coryellcountytx.gov.
The notice carries no dismissals and removes no charges from the docket. Its operative effect is to reset grand jury presentation calendars and arraignment dates, buying investigators and prosecutors additional runway while court operations remain constrained by the aftermath of the fire.
The Coryell County District Clerk's office is the parallel point of contact for confirming current deadlines in specific cases, particularly for defendants whose 90-day window was approaching before the extension took effect.
