Coryell County offices, banks and services close for Memorial Day

County offices, city halls, banks and several public services across Coryell County will be closed for Memorial Day, so residents who need in-person help will need to finish errands before the holiday or wait until Tuesday, May 26.

Coryell County posted that county offices will be closed Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day, and Gatesville’s city calendar also listed city offices as closed for the holiday. The Gatesville Messenger said the Coryell County Courthouse, the City of Gatesville, the City of Evant and the Farm Service Agency were all on the closure list. For anyone who needs county business handled in person, the deadline effectively shifts to the last business day before the holiday weekend.

The shutdown reaches into everyday banking, too. The listed closures include Extraco Bank, Cadence Bank, Educator’s Credit Union, First National Bank of Central Texas, First National Bank of Gatesville, First National Bank of Evant and First National Bank of Oglesby. Local post offices will also be closed, which means mail service and counter transactions will be limited for the holiday. Anyone needing deposits, withdrawals, stamps or other in-person banking work will need to plan ahead.

Several community institutions will also pause operations. The Gatesville Public Library, the Gatesville Senior and Multi-Service Center, the Coryell County Museum and Historical Center and The Gatesville Messenger itself will be closed. Schools in the area had already finished for the year, and the Boys & Girls Club was also listed as closed. That leaves a narrower window for families, seniors and anyone relying on regular weekday services across Gatesville and the rest of the county.

Memorial Day falls on the last Monday in May and carries a history that reaches back to Decoration Day after the Civil War. The National Archives says the war caused more than 620,000 military deaths, about 2% of the U.S. population at the time, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared Decoration Day should be observed on May 30, 1868. The first large observance was held at Arlington National Cemetery that year, with Gen. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant present, and the holiday became a national holiday in 1971. In Coryell County, that national day of remembrance also brings a practical reminder: finish county business, banking and library trips before Monday, because much of the community will be closed.
