Gatesville baseball opens 4A playoff series against Bellville at Elgin High School
Gatesville reached Elgin with a 22-12 record and a three-game sweep of Marble Falls, but Bellville brought a 9-1 district mark and a 25-2, 11-0 postseason blitz.

Gatesville’s baseball run had already given Coryell County something to rally around, and the Hornets carried that momentum into their toughest postseason test yet, a 4A Division I area series against Bellville at Elgin High School. The opener was listed for 5:45 p.m. CDT Thursday, with the neutral-site series posted as part of the 2026 UIL Texas Baseball Championships.
The Hornets arrived at Elgin with a 22-12 record after outlasting Marble Falls in three games. Gatesville won that bi-district set 5-1, 8-2 and 7-3, a clean follow-up to the kind of playoff breakthrough the program had been building toward for years. In 2023, Gatesville beat Marble Falls two games to one for its first playoff series win since 2010, a run that was described as only the fifth baseball playoff series victory in school history.
That history has made this spring feel different around Gatesville High School and Gatesville Independent School District. Coach Chase Smith has already been tied to the program’s turnaround, with that 2023 postseason win credited to the team’s growth, stronger fan support and a sharper emphasis on defense and situational baseball. Now the Hornets were back on the same stage, trying to prove that run was not a one-time spike but the start of a longer stretch of playoff relevance.
Bellville brought a sharper regular-season résumé and a more explosive opening round. The Brahmas finished 17-13 overall but went 9-1 in district play, while Gatesville finished 5-5 in district. Bellville swept Stafford in two games, winning 25-2 and 11-0, and MaxPreps listed Ty Morgan as Bellville’s head coach. That combination of district dominance and lopsided playoff wins made Bellville Gatesville’s biggest test so far, especially with a best-of-three series hanging on every inning.
Fans tracking the matchup could follow the series through the UIL 4A Division I bracket and the team schedule listings on MaxPreps, where Gatesville’s path showed the Marble Falls wins and Bellville’s path showed the Stafford sweep. For a Gatesville program that has spent more than a decade trying to stack postseason victories, Elgin marked the next chance to turn a rare breakthrough into a lasting standard.
