Frederic Acevedo, a 42-year-old Millville man, was struck by a car at the intersection of East Sherman Avenue and South Lincoln Avenue in Vineland shortly before 6 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, and died the following day at Cooper University Hospital in Camden. The Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office confirmed his death in a statement on Monday.

The driver, Karolina Ortiz-Angel, 21, of Bridgeton, was behind the wheel of a blue 2013 Ford Mustang traveling eastbound on East Sherman Avenue when she saw a pedestrian in her lane, police said. She swerved and told investigators she did not believe her vehicle had struck him. Ortiz-Angel stayed briefly at the scene, but left after she could not locate anyone on the roadway.

When officers arrived, she was already gone. Acevedo was transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he died Sunday of his injuries. Ortiz-Angel was not injured in the collision.

Vineland police later located the Mustang and conducted a traffic stop. The vehicle had damage consistent with evidence recovered at the crash scene, according to police. Officers identified Ortiz-Angel as the driver and issued her motor vehicle citations for leaving the scene of a collision causing death and failing to report a collision. No criminal charges have been filed as of the most recent reports; the investigation remains ongoing.

Officer Anthony Capelli of the Vineland Police Department traffic unit is leading the probe. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information is asked to contact Capelli at (856) 691-4111, extension 4350, and to reference case 26-13272. Anonymous tips are also welcome.
