Yariel Afanador, 44, of Vineland was sentenced on December 5 by the Honorable Niki Arbittier, J.S.C. to 15 years in New Jersey State Prison with a six and a half year period of parole ineligibility for possession with intent to distribute more than five ounces of cocaine, a first degree offense. Judge Arbittier also imposed a concurrent five year term with a three and a half year period of parole ineligibility for two counts of possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose. Afanador pleaded guilty to the charges on October 3.

The prosecution grew out of a lengthy investigation by the New Jersey State Police Strategic Investigations Unit after U.S. Postal Service investigators flagged multiple Cumberland County addresses receiving suspected controlled dangerous substances shipped from Puerto Rico. Surveillance conducted by state troopers found a coconspirator network in which Afanador routinely retrieved packages soon after delivery and transported them to his residence. In several instances other residents brought packages directly to Afanador. Troopers also established that Afanador took multiple trips to Puerto Rico in the days before suspect packages arrived.

Search warrants were executed on July 14, 2023 after a package was delivered to an address in Millville. At that time a coconspirator, identified as Juan Rivera Maldonado, placed the contents of the package, approximately one kilogram of cocaine, into Afanador’s vehicle. Investigators recovered an additional approximate kilogram of cocaine at Afanador’s residence along with two firearms.

Three associates previously pleaded guilty and received prison sentences. Alexander Maldonado, 35, of Vineland pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute cocaine, second degree, and possession of two firearms without serial numbers, third degree, and was sentenced to five years on November 15, 2024. Juan Rivera Maldonado, 54, of Millville pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute cocaine, first degree, and received a ten year sentence on March 14. Juan Afanador, 41, of Vineland pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute cocaine, second degree, and was sentenced to five years on April 25.

For Cumberland County residents this case underscores the role of interagency cooperation in disrupting distribution networks and the vulnerability of postal routes to exploitation. The sentences remove several alleged traffickers from the community for substantial periods, while law enforcement and public officials will face continuing pressure to monitor mail related vulnerabilities and to encourage community reporting of suspicious packages as part of broader efforts to reduce drug related harm.
