Vineland Puerto Rican Festival marks 60 years with weeklong celebration

Six decades of volunteer work, family participation and neighborhood pride will again come into focus when El Festival Puertorriqueno de New Jersey Inc. marks the 60th anniversary of Vineland’s Puerto Rican Festival. The celebration is set for July 19 through July 26 and will again place Puerto Rican heritage at the center of civic life in Cumberland County, where the festival has become one of Vineland’s signature annual events.

The weeklong schedule reflects how the festival has grown beyond a single gathering into a citywide tradition. Vineland calendar listings describe a flag raising, folkloric day, teen night, kids day, international day and closing parade and ceremonies, a structure that turns the anniversary into a sequence of public events across the week. The city’s listings also place the Puerto Rican Festival alongside Founders Day Weekend and the Holiday Parade as one of Vineland’s signature annual celebrations, underscoring its standing in the municipal calendar.

The festival’s closing-day parade will begin at West and Landis Avenue, travel down Landis to North East Boulevard and end at Landis Park. That route keeps the celebration in familiar downtown and park spaces that have long served as public gathering points for Vineland residents. City listings also note that the Landis Park portion of the festival has included folkloric day, teen night, kids day, international day and, in prior years, a car show, giving the site a central role in the festival’s public face.

The festival’s roots run deep. nj.com reported in 2011 that the event was in its 44th year, showing how long it had already been part of the city’s cultural calendar. In 2014, the same outlet noted that attendees came from across the East Coast and beyond, reflecting the festival’s reach well past Cumberland County. A 2016 report said the Cultural Heritage Commission of Cumberland County sponsored the festival and that it began with a flag raising at Vineland City Hall, linking the celebration to both county institutions and city government.

City Hall still serves as the traditional opening point for the festival week, with the flag raising beginning at 1 p.m. on the steps of City Hall. By pairing that civic ceremony with parade day, live bands, food, rides and community events, Vineland’s Puerto Rican Festival continues to mark not just a birthday, but a lasting public presence in the city’s cultural and civic life.
