Decatur County Upgrades Travel Status to Orange Watch, Red Warning Due Midnight
Decatur County upgraded travel to a Watch (Orange) at 8:23 PM and warned a Warning (Red) will take effect at midnight; heavy overnight snow and subzero wind chills make roads hazardous.

Decatur County officials raised the county travel status to a Watch (Orange) level effective at 8:23 PM on Jan. 24 and said the status would change to a Warning (Red) at midnight following that announcement. County leaders cited a forecast for heavy overnight snowfall, blowing and drifting snow, and dangerously low wind chills that will create hazardous driving conditions for residents and first responders.
“The forecast predicts that the heaviest snowfall will occur overnight. Blowing, drifting, and subzero wind chills will lead to hazardous conditions for public travel,” Decatur County Commissioners said in the statement reported by WTRE Radio. The commissioners, Emergency Management Board, and Decatur County Highway Department will continue to monitor conditions and said any changes to the travel status would be released immediately to the community.
Operational response focused on keeping main routes passable. “The Decatur County Highway Department is currently pretreating problematic areas and clearing roadways this evening (1/24). The Highway Department will have crews clearing roads for at least the next continuous 24 hours,” the county statement said. Officials explained the move to a Warning is intended to protect both the public and first responders and to limit snow compaction that can freeze into ice. “The Travel Warning will help limit snow compaction which causes ice on the roadways. At the anticipated low temperatures, compacted snow on the roadways will be difficult to removed because salt is less effective,” the statement added.
Regional reporting shows the storm has had wider impacts. WTHR described roads statewide as snow-covered and noted the storm dropped “10+ inches of snow to downtown Indianapolis.” The same statewide travel alert advised that many counties south of Interstate 70 were under Travel Warnings and urged that traveling be avoided if possible. WTHR’s county-by-county listing included Decatur with a Watch status.
Local weather data posted on the DecaturDailyDemocrat site captured cold, windy conditions with a daytime high near 15F and a low near -4F and sustained winds. The DecaturDailyDemocrat weather widget read: “Overcast skies and windy. A few flurries or snow showers possible. High near 15F. Winds W at 20 to 30 mph. Tonight: A few clouds. Very cold. Low -4F. Winds WSW at 10 to 15 mph.” That page carried an update timestamp of January 27, 2026 @ 12:28 am.
For Decatur County residents, the immediate implications are clear: expect hazardous travel, possible delays in snow removal on smaller roads, and limited effectiveness of salt treatments at very low temperatures. County officials closed their message with an appeal to public caution: “Any changes to the travel status will be immediately released to the community. Please stay safe.” Watch local county channels and WTRE for updates as crews work through the overnight period.
