Tyler Steven Meadows, 32, of Decatur, faces a second-degree murder charge after an argument at a Shiloh Road residence Saturday evening left Jeffery Kendall Barton, 58, dead from a gunshot wound.

Meigs County deputies responding to the Shiloh Road address on the night of April 4 located Barton with an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. Within hours, the Meigs County Sheriff's Office was joined by agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, who entered the case at the request of 9th Judicial District Attorney General Russell Johnson.

By Sunday morning, April 5, TBI agents had developed enough probable cause to obtain a warrant for Meadows, born February 9, 1994. He was arrested and booked into the Meigs County Jail on the single count of second-degree murder. The span from the initial call to a signed arrest warrant was roughly 24 hours, suggesting investigators quickly gathered witness accounts, physical evidence, and potentially surveillance footage from the scene.

In Tennessee, a second-degree murder charge generally alleges an intentional killing without premeditation. The charge reflects a prosecutorial determination based on available evidence; Meadows is presumed innocent unless convicted. District Attorney General Johnson's office oversees the 9th Judicial District, which includes Meigs County.

Authorities have not released a motive or a detailed timeline of the confrontation beyond confirming it began as an argument at the residence. No additional suspects have been named publicly, and officials have not indicated whether outstanding safety concerns remain in the Shiloh Road neighborhood.

The case's next public milestones will come through Meigs County court filings. An arraignment and possible bond hearing are expected to be scheduled in Meigs County General Sessions or Criminal Court; those records, once filed with the Meigs County court clerk, will establish bond conditions and a hearing schedule. As the investigation continues, ballistics analysis, medical examiner findings, and any witness statements gathered by TBI agents will shape whether prosecutors seek additional charges or move the case toward a grand jury indictment.
