Masynn Atkinson’s next step was sealed in front of Scotts Hill teammates and supporters Thursday afternoon, when the Lady Lions softball right fielder signed to play at Jackson State Community College. The school set the celebration for 1:30 p.m. in the Kay Hart Cafetorium, turning a college commitment into a public milestone for a program that has made those moments part of its identity.

Atkinson’s signing matters beyond one roster move. Scotts Hill softball says it has produced 14 college softball signees from 2015 to the present, a number that shows how often the Lady Lions have helped players move from a small-school schedule into the college game. For younger athletes in the program, Atkinson now becomes a visible example of what can come from staying in the gym, showing up for practice, and working through a full high school season with an eye on the next level.

The Lady Lions play both junior varsity and varsity schedules and list 34 regular-season games, a workload that gives players repeated chances to grow against live competition. Head coach Tyler Sowell leads the program, with assistants Greg McClain, Chloe Allen, and Austin Cost helping guide a pipeline that has sent players on to college softball year after year. Atkinson’s signing adds another name to that list and reinforces the program’s role in the athletic life of Scotts Hill and Henderson County.

Jackson State Community College brings Atkinson into an established college setting. The Green Jays named Bethany Barcroft head coach in August 2023, and the program competed in the 2025-26 season, giving Atkinson a place in a team with an active schedule and a defined athletic structure. Jackson State’s Green Jay Sports Network serves as the official platform for the program’s athletic events, another sign that the college softball program is fully built out and ready for new players to enter.

For Scotts Hill, the afternoon in the Kay Hart Cafetorium was about more than a signature on paper. It was proof that a local high school program can still carry a player from Henderson County to the college level, one signing day at a time.
