The Dolores Bears traveled to Pagosa Springs for a late-afternoon doubleheader March 19 and came home on the short end of both scoreboards, falling 11-1 and 16-11 to the Pirates in Four Corners action that opened at 3 p.m.

In the first game, the Bears lost to Pagosa Springs by a score of 1-11. The second contest was a higher-scoring affair, with Dolores dropping that game 11-16.

Heading into the twinbill, Pagosa Springs held a 4-3 record while Dolores stood at 0-3. The losses pushed the Bears to 0-5 on the young season. Pagosa Springs had already beaten the Bears in their first meeting of the year, making the March 19 doubleheader a third and fourth setback against the same opponent.

Pirate coach Jon Wells had made clear his expectations ahead of the matchup, stating he anticipated his squad to beat Dolores in both games. "I believe we're the better team," Wells said. "I believe we're set up to win the games, and we have to take care of those games that we are expected to win."

The doubleheader was the Bears' fifth game of the 2025-26 season, a stretch that has included losses to Kirtland Central and Monticello. Dolores fell to Kirtland Central 7-12 on March 6, and lost to Monticello 2-12 on March 13.

The Bears are a program still finding its footing at the varsity level. Last year, the team fielded only a JV squad; this season marks the program's return to varsity competition under head coach and athletic director Garver. "Last year was about getting some playing time and trying to teach them as much as we could about baseball and now, we're doing the same thing, just at a higher level," Garver said.

The Bears' schedule does not ease up significantly from here. Upcoming contests include a trip to Ignacio and a berth in the Aztec Invitational, followed by home games against Ignacio and Monticello and a road contest at Nucla. Each game represents another opportunity for a young roster to build on the experience of a difficult early-season run.
