Mancos Track Hosts Three-School Middle School Tri Meet April 7
Middle schoolers from Mancos, Dolores and Dove Creek competed in sprints, relays and field events Monday at the Mancos High School track.
Three communities spread across a wide stretch of southwest Colorado rural territory converged on the Mancos High School track Monday as athletes from Mancos, Dolores and Dove Creek competed in the Mancos-Dolores-Dove Creek Middle School Tri.
The meet's timeline opened with a coaches' scratch meeting at 2:30 p.m. to confirm entries and lane assignments before field events began at 3:00 p.m. Running events followed at 4:00 p.m.
The competition covered both sides of a full track and field card. Field athletes competed in shot put, discus, high jump and long jump, with team scoring rules in place for the throwing events. The running order moved through the sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relay before individual races at 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1600m. The 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays rounded out the running program. Girls' events preceded boys' events throughout.
Louis Horton of Mancos RE-6 served as the coordination contact across the three school districts and handled logistics for participating athletic programs.

For Dolores RE-2J and Dove Creek athletes, the tri format keeps spring competition within regional driving distance, limiting the transportation burden that constrains participation at smaller rural schools. An afternoon meet at a neighboring district's track is a meaningfully different logistical ask than a multi-hour trip to a larger invitational, and for families managing work schedules and limited bus availability, that gap matters.
Middle-school meets in this region also carry developmental weight beyond any single result. Competing in a multi-school format against regional opponents gives younger athletes experience on regulation tracks and a baseline against peers they may run against again at the high school level. For Dolores County families watching a seventh- or eighth-grader test their first 400m or find their footing in a relay exchange, Monday's meet at Mancos offered exactly that kind of early-season measure.
