Crews from the Colorado Department of Transportation and contract partner Sturgeon Electric broke ground March 23 on a $1,616,200 safety project to install conflict-warning systems at four rural intersections across Douglas and Jefferson counties, targeting corridors on Colorado Highway 83, Colorado Highway 86, and Colorado Highway 74 that have accumulated troubling crash histories.

"These locations were selected based on a pattern of crashes," said Maddie Garbalagtys, CDOT's Communications Manager. "These conflict warning systems are a way we can attempt to improve safety without necessarily impeding traffic flow where possible."

The systems use sensors and flashing lights and signs to alert drivers to potential collisions at dangerous intersections, especially those with poor sightlines or high crash rates. Installing the warning systems, CDOT says, will help significantly reduce crashes in these rural areas.

The four chosen spots are the CO 83 and Gillian Avenue intersection between Mile Point 37 and MP 38, the CO 83 and Russellville Road intersection between MP 41 and MP 40, the CO 86 and Deerfield Road intersection at MP 11, and the CO 74 and Kerr Gulch intersection at MP 1.

Work began at the Gillian Avenue and Russellville Road locations on CO 83, and will then move to the Deerfield location on CO 86, followed by Kerr Gulch on CO 74. The project is expected to be complete by early summer 2026.

During normal working hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, motorists should expect single-lane closures at the CO 83 intersections at Gillian Avenue and Russellville Road, and shoulder closures at CO 86 and Deerfield Road and CO 74 and Kerr Gulch. Speeds will drop from 65 mph to about 45 mph to protect workers.

Drivers with questions about the project can call 720-804-1509 or email [email protected]. Real-time updates on lane closures and work-zone conditions are available at COtrip.org or through the COtrip Planner mobile app.
